Emerging Business Award

This Award is for a business that has started trading within the last 2 years. Whether you are a sole trader or already have a number of staff, as long as you are trading you are welcome to enter. The criteria is slightly different to the Small, Medium and Large businesses with less emphasis on financials.

Judging criteria:

  • Introduction to your business (10%)
  • Management and Strategy (20%)
  • Sales and Marketing (10%)
  • Investing in your People (10%)
  • Sustainability (10%)
  • Customer Service Experience (10%)
  • Health and Safety (10%)
  • Overall success (20%)

Please provide a short statement and the following financials, to be written and signed by a Chartered Accountant, to verify that your business is trading.

Existing businesses that have rebranded or have been taken over by new ownership are not eligible for this category.

Small Business Award

This is a business that has an annual turnover of less than $1 million.

 Judging criteria:

  • Introduction to your business (10%)
  • Management and Strategy (20%)
  • Sales and Marketing (10%)
  • Investing in your People (10%)
  • Sustainability (10%)
  • Customer Service Experience (10%)
  • Health and Safety (10%)
  • Overall success (20%)

Please provide a short statement and the following financials, to be written and signed by a Chartered Accountant, to verify that your business is trading and confirm that your business is liquid and profitable.

Medium Business Award

This is a business that has an annual turnover of between $1 million and $3.5 million.

Judging criteria:

  • Customer Service Experience (10%)
  • Health and Safety (10%)
  • Overall success (20%)

Large Business Award

This is a business that has an annual turnover of over $3.5 million.

Community Impact Award

This award recognises a programme, project, campaign or an overall business that has had, or continues to have, a positive impact on the Nelson Tasman community in a way that inspires others and makes a difference. This category is open to applicants from all organisations, including non-profit, charities and educational programmes. 

Judging criteria:

  • Why your programme/project/campaign/business exists
  • What impact has it had on the Nelson Tasman community
  • What value has it added to the Nelson Tasman community
  • What sort of barriers/obstacles have you faced that you have overcome and how you did it?
  • Key results achieved against your planning objectives

Clever Business Award

This award is for a business that demonstrates an extraordinary business story as a result of pure grit and clever thinking. This could be an innovative or inventive approach to people, products or processes. Entrants need to prove how their clever business story has contributed to the success of the Nelson/Tasman economy in a way that creates added-value enterprise and/or world-class brands.

Judging criteria:

  • Description of what makes your business clever and innovative
  • How you have used clever thinking/innovation/technology
  • What value has your business added to the Nelson Tasman region
  • What is your x-factor
  • How working in Nelson Tasman has helped you to be a clever business

Business Person of the Year

This award celebrates an extraordinary business person in the Nelson Tasman region who exhibits qualities that inspire our business community. This person may have their own business, or work within an organisation that has excelled within their industry or inspired others in innovation and/or business excellence.

Judging criteria:

  • Excellent level of business standards and ethics
  • Demonstrated leadership, vision and community involvement
  • Proven business achievement
  • Fosters awareness of the Nelson Tasman business community through local, national or international business dealings

Entrants will be accepted by way of online nomination on the Chamber website. Once nominations close, the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Board will select the top 5 finalists who will then be advised they have been nominated. Voting of the finalists will then open to public vote on the Chamber of Commerce website.

Young Business Person of the Year

This person must be aged 35 and under. This award celebrates an extraordinary young business person in the Nelson Tasman region who exhibits qualities that inspire our business community. They may have their own business or work within an organization that has excelled within their industry or inspired others in innovation and/or business excellence.

Judging criteria:

  • Excellent level of business standards and ethics
  • Proven business achievement
  • Plans for future growth of the business

Entrants will be accepted by way of online nomination on the Chamber website. Once nominations close, the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Board will select the top 5 finalists who will then be advised they have been nominated. Voting of the finalists will then open to public vote on the Chamber of Commerce website.

Nelson Pine Industries Supreme Business Award

All entries into the Emerging, Small, Medium and Large Business Awards will be automatically entered into the Supreme Business Award. This is an overall winner that scores highly in all aspects of the judging criteria and has an x-factor that inspires the Nelson/Tasman business community.
