The first BA5 of the year was a great success at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust is a community-led organisation creating a pest free ecosystem in mature native forest in Nelson. It aims to be New Zealand’s richest conservation environment for visitors, education and research.
While biodiversity conservation is one focus, the project is more about people. It will:
- Generate significant income for the region through attracting visitors year round.
- Provide a site where people can be involved in restoring their natural heritage.
- Be a substantial resource for education, research and training.
- Be a source of native birds to spread back into settled areas and into peoples’ lives.
Integral to creating the sanctuary is construction of a 14km long pest-proof fence, to enclose the historic water supply reserve. Come to hear of the progress made to date, and plans in progress for this important regional project.
